Mauritania has ambitious plans to take a quantum leap in green transition. With the establishment of one of the world's largest green energy parks, Megaton Moon aims to position Mauritania strongly in the green transition. The project will be strategically located near the capital, where conditions for solar and wind are ideal. The project is planned as a phased implementation process, with the aim of producing 4 million tons of green hydrogen annually or processing 18 million tons of green ammonia upon completion. This involves the creation of a hybrid of 60 GW / 190 TWh solar and wind energy, along with a 35 GW electrolysis facility. The phased implementation aims to reach the first pilot phase before 2028 and the final phase in 2033-2035.
The design of Megaton Moon draws inspiration from regional symbols and historic references, including a clear reference to the Mauritanian flag. Most notably, a crescent moon, containing solar panels and wind turbines, will be visible from space with a diameter of almost 60 km.
In addition to the crescent moon, which incorporates solar panels and wind turbines, a central area will host a city, a large industrial zone, and accompanying agricultural lands. Industries, agriculture, and residents in the area stand to benefit from nearby renewable energy production, providing access to affordable electricity and potential surplus heat from hydrogen production.
Megaton Moon is a development project created in close collaboration with GreenGo Energy and COWI. In November 2023, GreenGo Energy applied to the Mauritanian government to initiate the project's development.
