DMJX is characterised by a solid, yellow brickwork base reminiscent of the iconic buildings of Aarhus University. The yellow bricks form a contrast to the rest of the ultramodern media school as the classic brick is succeeded by, first, a transparent mezzanine and, second, an airy and light upper storey of aluminium. A school where the future rests effortlessly and elegantly on the past.

The new DJMX building is located at the beginning of the new campus road, which will connect Aarhus University Park and IT-Byen at Katrinebjerg. From here, tomorrow’s students of journalism, communication and media will take their first step into the art of storytelling and acquire knowledge to pass on.

The new building is shaped as an inviting, characterful and future-oriented platform for school activities, while providing a natural place for students, teachers, researchers and representatives from the media and communication business to meet.
The base of the building builds on the existing terrain and grants access to the building. The mezzanine, with its open glass façades, holds everything that should be most visible and accessible to students and teachers, e.g., a media centre, service centre and the canteen. At the very top is ‘the Cloud’ – a broad palette of study facilities, teaching rooms as well as administration facilities and a roof terrace open to the public. All in all, a modern, welcoming educational institution with its own dedicated radio/TV/sound studio and teaching rooms that are flexible and can be sub-divided.
The building integrates a very special video installation by international contemporary artist Pipilotti Rist
The building integrates a very special video installation by international contemporary artist Pipilotti Rist, which uses video projections that turn on and off in time with the other automatic lighting systems in the building, and that are choreographed to match the weather and time of day. This accentuates the function of the building – to establish fascinating and sensuous stories.
